The Howard Suamico Lions Club is pleased to announce a $500 scholarship to each of three Bay Port seniors: Anna Mittag, Mercedes Caelwaerts, and Carson Mevis. These students have demonstrated an outstanding record of service to their school and community.
In addition to being the class valedictorian, Anna Mittag has given over 400 hours of service through the Youth Service Learning (YSL) program. Among the groups with whom she has been active are Big Brothers Big Sisters, Food Pantry, Salvation Army and tutor at our elementary schools. She has also served as president of YSL during her senior year. Anna plans to attend Notre Dame University to major in pre med.
Mercedes Caelwaerts is an outstanding student with a G.P.A.of over 4.0. She still found time to give of herself to the Giving Tree, Feed My starving Children and the GRIT program. She has found reward and humility in working with those less fortunate. It has helped her develop leadership skills that she will carry forward in helping others. Mercedes will attend Minnesota state to study Exercise Sci. and PrePhysical Therapy.
Carson Mevis found his calling to service through his membership in the Boy Scouts. Carson was selected to be part of the Order of the Arrow (OA) whose motto is “Cheerful Service.” Through the many service activities of the OA Carson has realized how important it is to give back to those less fortunate. Carson will attend NWTC to study welding and metal fabrication.
Congratulations to Anna, Mercedes, and Carson. You truly exemplify the motto of Lions clubs everywhere, “We Serve!”
