Founding of the HSBPA
The Howard Suamico Business and Professional Association (HSBPA) was established in 1979 through the collaborative efforts of several prominent local business leaders—Pfotenhauer Funeral Home (Harold Pfotenhauer), Weslow Water Systems (Tom Weslow), Gordon Lenz and Associates (Gordon Lenz), and Red’s Excavating (Katie Peters). Their shared vision was to create an organization dedicated to supporting and strengthening businesses in the Howard-Suamico area.
Mission and Activities
The HSBPA is committed to fostering growth and success among local businesses and professionals. The association achieves this by encouraging educational initiatives, fortifying member organizations, and promoting economic development throughout the community. Additionally, the HSBPA serves as a vital forum for small business owners, where they can connect, exchange ideas, and form meaningful relationships with others who appreciate the unique opportunities and challenges of running a business in a small town.
Significant Community Contributions
In 1981, the HSBPA played a pivotal role in the opening of the Tower Drive Bridge. The association organized a fair and a public run across the bridge, which was later named after Leo Frigo. This event marked a significant infrastructure improvement for Interstate 43 over the Fox River and spurred further business growth in the Howard-Suamico area.
Communication and Outreach
To keep members informed and engaged, the HSBPA launched the “Howard Suamico Business and Professional Association Newsletter” in 1982. This publication provided affordable advertising and news for local businesses. Renamed “The Community Bulletin,” the newsletter continued until December 2025, when increasing costs led to its discontinuation. The association then transitioned to an e-newsletter to maintain strong connections among members and the wider community.
Networking and Lasting Relationships
Relationships developed through the HSBPA have become invaluable for local business owners. The association’s network offers a supportive environment that fosters effective “word-of-mouth” advertising, helping businesses thrive and demonstrating the enduring importance of business friendships within the organization.
Community Support and Fundraising
Over the years, the HSBPA has organized numerous fundraisers. Proceeds from these events have provided scholarships for local students, supported the Howard Suamico School District’s Academic Career and Planning Program, and benefited initiatives such as the Taste of the Villages and Auction Fundraiser in support of The Giving Tree.
Current Programs and Events
Today, the HSBPA continues to offer valuable opportunities for business growth and professional development. The association hosts Lunch ‘N Learn educational sessions and a variety of networking activities, including a Pickleball Tournament, Cornhole Tournament, and the Annual Meeting/Holiday Party. These events further strengthen the local business community and help members develop lasting connections.
