On Saturday, September 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Haven Animal Rescue and Community Outreach (HARCO) will be hosting an open house to celebrate the opening of its new shelter at 991 North Military Avenue in Howard. This family friendly event will consist of hourly door prize giveaways, kids’ games, facility tours and meeting a few of the resident pets currently waiting to find their forever families. There will also be a craft sale and Bake and Bark Sale with treats for people and pets alike with proceeds going to the shelter.
Haven Animal Rescue and Community Outreach (HARCO) is a grassroots nonprofit, volunteer-run animal welfare organization dedicated to helping the pets and people of Northeast Wisconsin. The new shelter is the culmination of three years of fundraising, hard work, planning, and dedication to the organization’s goal to be a full-service animal shelter in the Howard area.
“Our mission is threefold,” said HARCO volunteer Dawn Salm. “We strive to provide a loving environment for surrendered and stray animals as they search for their forever homes both through our foster network and now our shelter. Second, we saw an opportunity to be a resource for people in our community having difficulty caring for their pets’ needs. Sometimes life gives us situations beyond our control, and people who are desperate to safely rehome or provide for their beloved pets don’t want to be put on a waiting list. And third, we assist other overcrowded shelters by coordinating transfer of their pets to our foster network and shelter to free up that shelter’s precious space enabling them to continue helping others. We believe our organization and shelter can fill these needs in our community.”
Salm said HARCO’s new building will enable the organization to provide love and enrichment to a limited number of dogs, cats, and small mammals while they search for their forever families.
“In addition to the shelter, we will continue to be a haven to additional pets via the private homes that form our incredible foster network,” she said. “We welcome and appreciate new volunteers, foster families, supplies, and financial donations to our veterinary care fund.”

“Haven Animal Rescue and Community Outreach is a true community resource serving the pets and people right here in our neighborhood,” Salm said. “We rely on our community to help us fulfill our goals. Please join us for our Open House on September 22nd to learn why we consider ourselves to be ‘not your ordinary shelter.’”
