The vision of the Howard-Suamico School District (HSSD) is to provide an “authentic, connected, and inspired experience for an ever-changing world.” This means that, in order to provide the best education possible, HSSD must offer an array of opportunities that prepare students for their lives after high school.
Each fall, Bay Port and the Howard-Suamico Business and Professional Association partner to host the Career Fair at Bay Port. At this event, more than 50 businesses set up booths and engage in conversations with students about the path to certain careers. In some cases, students may even have the chance to interview for a summer position or internship.
Further, the Howard-Suamico Education Foundation (HSEF) funds enriching initiatives. These grants aid in student learning and/or provide learning opportunities through real-life experiences. Specifically through Raise the Sail in 2023-24, HSEF provided six grants totaling $19,670:
• Music Production Grant ($4,950): Bay Port Music Department
• Graduate Profile Tools Grant ($2,000): HSSD District-Wide
• Livestock and Sheep Equipment ($2,000): Bay Port FFA
• Science Notebooking PD ($5,000): HSSD District-Wide
• PAC Livestream Equipment ($5,000): Bay Port High School
• Broadcast Club Headsets ($720): Bay Port High School
Finally, for the first time during Summer School 2024, HSSD added a CTE Course Exploration option on Tuesday afternoons. Students signed up to learn through hands-on experience. Many of these Course Exploration options featured a local business owner or community leader who has expertise in a certain area. For example, Savoye Salon Spa taught the TikTok Hair and Braids Class and Green Bay Scuba LLC taught the Snorkeling Class.
While these are just a few examples of how our school district and community partners to provide real-life academic opportunities, the list could go on. If you are or know a business owner who would like to discuss an idea for partnership with HSSD, please contact Micki Volk, College and Career Readiness Coordinator, at mickvolk@hssdschools.org.
If you have any questions about this topic, please contact Rachelle Paulsen, Board of Education Director. Visit hssdschools.org for more information about the Howard-Suamico School District.
